His Life

A Man Who Showed Up

Roots in the Community

Joe Buccheri Sr. was born and raised in the neighborhood he would spend his entire life serving. From an early age, he understood something that many people spend a lifetime learning: that the strength of a community is measured not by its buildings or its institutions, but by the people who show up for one another. Joe showed up — every single time.

Family First

In 1965, Joe married and began building the family that would become the center of his world. He was a devoted husband and a father who led by example, instilling in his children the same values that defined his own life: hard work, humility, generosity, and an unshakeable belief in the potential of every person they encountered. His family was not just his greatest joy — it was his greatest teacher.

Champion of Young People

Beginning in the late 1970s, Joe became a fixture in youth sports and neighborhood organizations. He coached teams, mentored teenagers, and became the kind of adult that young people sought out when they needed guidance, encouragement, or simply someone to believe in them. He had a rare gift: he could see the potential in a young person that they couldn't yet see in themselves — and he had the patience and the love to help them find it.

A Legacy of Service

Over four decades, Joe touched the lives of hundreds of young people in his community. He never sought recognition or reward. He simply believed that if you had the ability to help someone, you had the responsibility to do so. That philosophy guided every decision he made, every relationship he built, and every moment he gave to others. When Joe passed away in 2018, the outpouring of love from the community was a testament to the life he had lived.

What He Believed

The Values That Guided Him

1

Show Up

Joe believed that presence was the most powerful gift you could give. He never missed a game, a graduation, or a moment when someone needed him.

2

Believe First

Before a young person could believe in themselves, Joe believed in them. He saw potential where others saw problems, and possibility where others saw limitations.

3

Give Without Keeping Score

Joe never gave with expectation of return. His generosity was unconditional — a reflection of his deep conviction that community is built on trust, not transactions.

4

Lead by Example

He didn't tell young people how to live — he showed them. Every day, through his own choices and his own character, Joe demonstrated what it meant to be a good person.

The Foundation

How the Foundation Began

When Joe passed away in 2018, the community he had served for so long came together to honor his memory in the most fitting way possible: by continuing his work. Family members, longtime friends, and the young people whose lives he had shaped gathered to establish The Joseph Buccheri Foundation in 2019.

The foundation was built on a simple premise — that Joe's approach to life, his belief in young people, and his commitment to community were not just personal qualities but a model worth replicating. Every program we run, every scholarship we award, and every mentor we connect is a direct expression of the values Joe lived by.
